Full disclosure, I’m a marketing manager in this wonderful little Startup called Cloud Academy. I have to start there so you know that even though I live in the marketing world and breathe technology, I’ve always felt a little like an outsider.

I’ve had the most amazing mentors at places like Disney and Amazon Web Services. My curiosity was encouraged and my ingenuity was rewarded, but I still felt alone. It wasn’t unusual to be in a room, in a hall or at an event with a hundred thousand people and see no one that looked like me.

I remember the first time I went to a hackathon with AWS and one of the female engineers came up to me and said, “I’ve never seen another female presenter here before, HI!” ::heart melt:: I love science, I’ve grown to appreciate math and Plizzanet Earth is my secret indulgence.

So for me, this new initiative is exciting. It means that we’ll have more ideas and more voices to pull inspiration from. It means that every time I show up someplace, I won’t get heads turning in my direction from the moment I enter. It means that when I look up across the table, I’ll see more faces like the ones I see with my current team (whom I adore to pieces). I feel #hopeful

I’m looking forward to doing my part by helping open up opportunities for more people to fall in love with science the way I did. With the help of a friend. 🙂
